Leasowe Lighthouse

Built in 1763, this is the oldest brick lighthouse in Britain. It originally served to guide ships entering the harbor. Although it ceased operations in 1908, the structure retains its original architectural appearance. Visitors go here to see a preserved example of 18th-century maritime engineering on the coast.

Getting There

The lighthouse is located on the coast north of Liverpool city centre. Access typically involves a combination of train or bus services toward the Wirral peninsula, followed by a short walk. The journey from the city centre generally takes about 45 to 60 minutes depending on the mode of transport.

Visit Duration

Because the site is a standalone landmark rather than a large complex, allow approximately 30 to 60 minutes to view the exterior and the surrounding shoreline.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors and exposed to coastal weather, so visits are best planned for clear days in spring or summer. It does not typically experience the heavy crowds found at central city attractions, though weekends are busier than weekdays.

Nearby Attractions

You can combine a visit here with other local landmarks in the area:

  • Egremont (6km)
  • Birkenhead Park (6.1km)
  • New Brighton Tower (6.5km)
  • New Brighton Lighthouse (6.5km)
