What It Is and Why to Visit

The Syre is a river flowing eastward across Luxembourg, passing through small settlements such as Schuttrange and Roodt-sur-Syre before reaching its confluence with the Moselle at Mertert. Travellers visit primarily for walking, cycling, and quiet rural scenery along the valley trails rather than commercial sightseeing.

Getting There from the City Centre

From Luxembourg City centre, you can reach several points along the watercourse by regional train. Services toward Wasserbillig stop at stations such as Roodt-sur-Syre and Mertert, taking approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Driving from the centre to access the valley generally takes between 15 and 25 minutes depending on the chosen starting point.

Time to Allow

Allow 1 to 3 hours for a leisurely walk through one of the riverside villages. If you plan to hike or cycle an extended section between towns toward the Moselle, allocate 3 to 4 hours.

When to Visit

Spring through autumn provides the most reliable trail conditions and pleasant weather for outdoor activities. Pathways can become wet and muddy during the winter months. The area does not experience heavy tourist crowds, making daylight hours at any time of the week suitable for a visit.

What to Combine It With

You can link a walk along the river corridor with other nearby historical and natural sites:

  • St Donatus' Chapel in Roeser (3.2km)
  • Aspelt Castle (3.7km)
  • Hesperange Castle (4.7km)
  • Gander (6.9km)
