About Puerta del Sol

Puerta del Sol is a public square in Madrid that serves as a central gathering point in the city. It is the place where the Spanish New Year tradition of eating twelve grapes originated, and its clock tower countdown has been broadcast live on television every year since 1962. Travellers visit the plaza to observe its historic surroundings, view the civic landmarks, and walk through one of Madrid's primary pedestrian focal points.

Getting There

Situated directly in the city centre, the square is reachable on foot in 5 to 10 minutes from most surrounding central neighbourhoods. It is also accessible by public transit via the Sol station, which connects several metro and commuter rail lines.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend about 20 to 30 minutes walking around the square and viewing the clock tower and surrounding buildings.

When to Visit

The plaza is active day and night, and it gets heavily crowded during the afternoon and evening hours. Visiting in the morning offers a calmer walk with significantly fewer pedestrians.

Nearby Attractions

Due to its central position, a visit can easily be combined with several destinations within walking distance:

  • Convent of Las Descalzas Reales (0.3km)
  • Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando (0.3km)
  • Main Square (0.4km)
  • Teatro de la Zarzuela (0.6km)
