Thilafushi

Thilafushi is an artificial island in the Kaafu Atoll, established in 1991 to serve as the primary waste landfill site for the Maldives. Unlike the natural coral islands and resorts of the region, this site provides a look at the environmental challenges and waste management infrastructure of the archipelago.

Getting There

The island is located west of Malé. Access is primarily via boat from the city centre. The transit time varies depending on the vessel used, but generally takes a short trip across the water.

Duration of Visit

Most visitors spend a few hours on the island to observe the landscape and the landfill operations before returning to the main city or heading to another island.

When to Visit

Visitors should be aware that this is an active industrial site, not a traditional tourist beach. It is advisable to visit during daylight hours for visibility. There are no specific peak tourist seasons for this location, and it does not typically experience crowds in the way resort islands do.

Nearby Locations

If you are visiting this area, you can combine the trip with visits to other nearby islands in the Kaafu Atoll:

  • Giraavaru (3km)
  • Gulhifalhu (3.6km)
  • Feydhoofinolhu (6.7km)
  • Velassaru (6.9km)
