Vaadhoo Island

Vaadhoo is a small island in the Maldives known for a natural phenomenon where the shoreline glows blue at night. This effect is caused by bioluminescent phytoplankton that emit light when agitated by the movement of waves. Travelers visit the island specifically to observe this light display along the beach.

Getting There

Access to the island is via boat from the city center of Malé. Depending on the type of vessel used, such as a public ferry or a private speedboat, the travel time varies. Most visitors arrive via Velana International Airport (MLE) before arranging water transport to the island.

Duration of Visit

A visit typically requires a few hours in the evening to allow for the onset of darkness. Some travelers choose to stay overnight to increase their chances of witnessing the bioluminescence, as the phenomenon depends on natural biological conditions.

When to Visit

The glow is most frequently observed during the summer months. The best time of day is after sunset, as the light is only visible in complete darkness. Because this is a natural occurrence, the glow is not guaranteed every night.
