Understanding the City Layout

Marrakech divides into two primary areas: the historic walled Medina and modern districts outside the ramparts.

  • The Medina: The ancient core centered on Jemaa el-Fnaa and Koutoubia Mosque. It is a dense, pedestrian labyrinth of souks where cars cannot enter.
  • Gueliz and Hivernage: The modern quarters west of the walls, featuring wide avenues, contemporary dining, and the central train station.

Arriving and Getting Around

Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK) sits just southwest of the city center.

  • From the airport: An express bus connects RAK directly to Jemaa el-Fnaa and the train station. Official taxis depart from a designated stand outside the terminal.
  • Inside the Medina: Walking is the only practical transit. Streets are narrow and shared with handcarts, bicycles, and motorbikes.
  • Across town: Hail cream-colored petits taxis for trips between Medina gates and modern neighborhoods. Ensure the driver turns on the meter before leaving.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

  • Accepting unsolicited directions: People lingering near alleys often offer unprompted guidance and then demand payment. Use offline maps and decline offers politely.
  • Relying on cards: Souks, food stalls, and taxis operate almost exclusively on cash. Carry small Moroccan dirham bills.

A Sensible First-Trip Flow

Dedicate your first day to exploring the central Medina, the Koutoubia gardens, and historic architecture like Bahia Palace. Save outlying sights, such as Jardin Majorelle in Gueliz, for later days once you are accustomed to the city's pace.
