Château d'If

Overview

Château d'If is a fortress and former island prison located off the coast of Marseille. Travellers visit to see the preserved stone cells, courtyards, and fortifications made famous as the setting in Alexandre Dumas's novel The Count of Monte Cristo, alongside views of the Marseille shoreline.

Getting There

Boats depart from the Old Port (Vieux-Port) in central Marseille. The boat crossing takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes each way.

Time to Allow

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the fortress grounds, chambers, and viewing platforms. When factoring in the round-trip ferry, set aside about half a day.

When to Visit

The site gets crowded during summer and on sunny weekends. Arriving on an early morning ferry helps avoid peak crowds and strong midday sun. Boat services can be suspended during periods of strong winds and rough seas, so check local weather before heading out.

Nearby Attractions

Visits are frequently paired with nearby spots in the same archipelago:

  • Île d’If (0.1km): The rocky islet supporting the fortress.
  • Ratonneau (1.3km): A neighbouring island with walking paths and coastal coves.
  • Frioul Islands (1.6km): The island chain encompassing the area.
  • Pomègues (2.4km): The largest island in the chain, connected to Ratonneau.
