Marseille Transporter Bridge

The Marseille Transporter Bridge was an engineering project designed by Ferdinand Arnodin and opened in 1905. It originally spanned the Old Port to facilitate movement across the water without obstructing maritime traffic. While the physical structure was destroyed in 1944, the site remains a point of historical interest for those studying the city's industrial heritage and urban evolution.

Getting There

The site is located at the edge of the Old Port (Vieux-Port). From the city centre, it is accessible via a short walk or by using the local bus network. Depending on your starting point in the centre, the journey typically takes 10 to 20 minutes.

Visit Duration

Since the bridge no longer exists as a standing structure, visitors generally spend 15 to 30 minutes at the location to view the area and read any available historical markers.

When to Visit

The area around the Old Port is active throughout the year. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon avoids the peak midday heat of the Mediterranean summer. The waterfront can become crowded during weekends and summer holidays.

Nearby Attractions

The location is well-positioned for combining with other landmarks within walking distance:

  • Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (0.4km)
  • Palais du Pharo (0.4km)
  • Abbey of St. Victor (0.5km)
  • Le Pharo (0.5km)
