Barrio Sur

Overview

Barrio Sur is a coastal neighborhood situated between Montevideo's Old Town and downtown. Known for its connection to Afro-Uruguayan candombe culture, visitors come to walk along the residential streets, view street murals, and stop at small neighborhood shops. It borders the Palermo district, making the two areas easy to explore together on foot.

Getting There

From downtown Montevideo, the area is accessible on foot in about 10 to 15 minutes walking south toward the coastline. Local public buses and taxis also operate frequently along the perimeter roads.

Suggested Duration

Plan to spend 1 to 2 hours to walk the streets, view the architecture, and stop at a local cafe or store.

When to Visit

Afternoons provide adequate daylight for walking around. Weekend afternoons, especially Sundays, tend to draw more people when local drumming groups practice in the streets. Weekdays and nights are much quieter, and visitors should stick to well-lit main streets after dark.

Nearby Attractions

The neighborhood is located within short walking distance of several central landmarks:

  • Plaza de Cagancha (0.6 km)
  • Plaza Fabini (0.6 km)
  • Centro (0.8 km)
  • Palacio Salvo (0.8 km)
