Cottonera Lines
What It Is
The Cottonera Lines are a 17th- and 18th-century defensive fortification network surrounding Cospicua and Birgu in Malta. Built on higher and broader ground than earlier defenses, the structure was engineered to protect harbor settlements. Visitors go to study historical military architecture and walk along surviving sections of the stone ramparts.
Getting There
From central transit areas, local buses reach the Three Cities in roughly 20 to 35 minutes. A taxi ride takes about 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic. The fortifications sit approximately 7 kilometres from Malta International Airport (MLA).
Visiting Time
Plan for 1 to 2 hours. This provides ample time to follow the walking paths along the bastions and examine the surviving defensive works.
When to Visit
Go during the morning or late afternoon. The elevated stone walkways lack shade, making midday visits hot during summer months. Because the site covers an extensive outdoor area, it rarely gets crowded.
