Key Transit Modes

U-Bahn: The fastest way across central Munich. Lines cross at central hubs like Hauptbahnhof, Sendlinger Tor, and Marienplatz.

S-Bahn: Suburban trains connect the airport, Dachau, and outer areas, funneling through a shared central corridor.

Trams and Buses: Best for surface trips across Schwabing and Haidhausen where subway stops are spaced wider apart.

Fares and Zones

Munich uses concentric zones. Zone M covers the city proper, while numbered outer zones reach outer suburbs and the airport.

  • Day Tickets: Taking more than two journeys in a day makes a Day Ticket cheaper than single fares. Group passes cover up to five adults.
  • Tourist Cards: Transit-plus-sightseeing cards rarely pay off unless visiting several paid sights daily; standard day passes suit most travelers.

Airport Transfers from Munich (MUC)

  • S-Bahn (S1 and S8): Depart every ten minutes for the center, taking forty minutes. Low effort, highly reliable, and moderate in cost.
  • Lufthansa Express Bus: Direct service to Hauptbahnhof via Schwabing. Moderate cost, but vulnerable to highway traffic.
  • Taxis: Highest cost band. Door-to-door convenience with zero transfers, taking forty minutes outside rush hours.

Practical Tips

Rush hours: Peak crowds hit between 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–18:30 on weekdays, especially on the central S-Bahn line.

Night travel: U-Bahn trains halt around 01:00 on weekdays, replaced by night trams and buses marked with an N. Weekend trains run all night.

Validation and accessibility: Unstamped paper tickets must be validated at platform boxes before boarding. Stations provide elevators and step-free access.
