Galleria Umberto I
Galleria Umberto I is a public shopping gallery in Naples, southern Italy. It is located directly across from the San Carlo opera house. It was built between 1887 and 1890, and was the cornerstone in the decades-long rebuilding of Naples—called the risanamento —that lasted until World War I. What it is
Galleria Umberto I is a glass-and-iron shopping arcade built in the late 1880s as part of Naples' post-cholera rebuilding effort. Its cruciform layout sits under a tall central glass dome, with marble floors and four-story arcaded facades lined with cafes, shops, and a few remaining historic storefronts. Travelers go for the architecture itself rather than the retail: it's a good example of the same Umbertine style seen in Milan's more famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and it doubles as a covered shortcut between the theatre district and the seafront.
Getting there
From the historic center it's an easy walk, typically 10-15 minutes from Piazza del Plebiscito or the Toledo metro stop. The gallery has entrances on Via Toledo, Via San Carlo, and Via Verdi, so it also works as a pass-through rather than a dedicated detour.
Time to allow
Fifteen to twenty minutes covers a walk-through and a look up at the dome; longer if you stop for coffee at one of the cafes inside.
When to go
Mornings and early afternoons are quieter; the gallery gets busier in the evening when nearby theatre crowds pass through. Being indoors, it's a reasonable stop if it's raining or during the midday heat.

It sits directly across from Teatro di San Carlo (0.1km) and next to the Church of San Ferdinando (0.1km), with San Giacomo degli Spagnoli close by (0.2km). The Royal Palace of Naples (0.3km) is a short walk further, making this a natural cluster to see together in one outing.
