Abeno Harukas
Abeno Harukas (あべのハルカス) is a multi-purpose commercial facility in Abenosuji Itchome, Abeno-ku, Osaka, Japan. It consists of the New Annex, Eastern Annex and a supertall skyscraper, Abeno Harukas. The building is 300 m (984 ft) tall and has 62 floors; it was the tallest building in Japan from 2014 to 2023, until Azabudai Hills Mori JP Tower seized the title.
What it is
Abeno Harukas is a 300-metre, 62-storey tower in Abeno-ku that combines a department store, offices, a hotel, and an observation deck near the top. Most travellers come specifically for the Harukas 300 observatory, which gives an open view over Osaka and, on clear days, out toward the surrounding hills and bay area.
Getting there
The building sits directly above Osaka's Tennoji Station, one of the city's major rail hubs, so it's reachable in roughly 10-15 minutes by train from central Osaka (Namba or Umeda). It connects straight into the station concourse, so there's minimal walking once you arrive.
How much time to allow
Plan for around 1.5 to 2 hours if you're mainly visiting the observation deck, including time in the elevators and queueing. Add extra time if you also want to browse the department store floors below.
When to go
Late afternoon into early evening lets you see the city in daylight and then watch it transition to night lights, which is popular, so expect more visitors around sunset. Weekends and holiday periods tend to draw larger crowds than weekday mornings. On overcast or rainy days the view is significantly reduced, so it's worth checking conditions before going up.
What to combine it with
Tennōji Park and the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts are both about 0.6km away, making them an easy pairing for a walk after the tower. Shitennō-ji Temple and Tennōji Zoo are a bit further at roughly 0.9km, but still walkable if you're spending a half or full day in the Tennoji/Abeno area.
