Kokubunji Temple
What it is
Kokubun-ji is a Buddhist temple in Kita-ku, Osaka, belonging to the Shingon school. Its foundation dates back to 655, during the reign of Empress Kōgyoku, which makes it one of the older religious sites in the city, though the surrounding buildings reflect centuries of rebuilding rather than original 7th-century structures. It is also referred to locally as Nagara Kokubun-ji. It's a quiet, functioning neighborhood temple rather than a major tourist stop, appealing to visitors interested in Osaka's older religious history away from the busier central sights.
