This museum is built almost entirely underground on the island of Nakanoshima, between the Dōjima and Tosabori rivers — above ground you'll mostly see the sculptural steel entrance structure, with the galleries themselves sitting below. It focuses on modern and contemporary art, both Japanese and international, making it a good stop for travellers more interested in 20th- and 21st-century work than the classical collections found at many other Japanese museums.
Getting there
It's in central Osaka, about a 10-minute walk from Higobashi Station. From the main downtown areas around Umeda or Namba, expect roughly 15-20 minutes by subway plus the walk.
Time to allow
Budget around 1.5 to 2 hours to see the collection at a comfortable pace, more if there's a special exhibition running.
When to go
As an underground museum, it's a reliable option regardless of weather, and a good choice on hot or rainy Osaka days. Special exhibitions can draw larger crowds, so weekday mornings tend to be calmer than weekends.
Combine it with
The Osaka Science Museum and the Nakanoshima area itself are both essentially next door (0.1km), making this an easy cluster to cover in one outing. For more art, the Yuki Museum of Art (1km) and the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka (1.2km) are within an easy walk along the river.
