Old Aker Church

Overview

Old Aker Church is a medieval stone church and the oldest surviving building in Oslo. Travellers visit to see its preserved Romanesque structure and walk through the surrounding historic cemetery, which offers a quiet environment to experience the city's early heritage.

Getting There

Located just north of the city centre, the site can be reached on foot in approximately 15 to 20 minutes from downtown. Public buses and trams also run regularly from central Oslo, taking about 10 minutes followed by a short uphill walk.

Suggested Duration

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes here. This allows enough time to inspect the stone exterior, look inside if open, and take a stroll around the cemetery grounds.

When to Visit

Daylight hours are recommended for exploring the churchyard and viewing the masonry. The location is rarely crowded, making it a peaceful stop throughout the year. If visiting on Sunday mornings, be mindful of scheduled religious services.
