Arriving and Getting Around

Araxos Airport (GPA) sits about 45 kilometers southwest of town. Regional KTEL buses serve the airport during flight seasons to link directly with the central terminal, while taxis wait outside arrivals. In the city, Lower Town is best navigated on foot. For trips north toward Rio, use the reliable Proastiakos suburban railway. City buses cover outlying neighborhoods, while taxis save you from climbing up to the fortress.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

• Treating Patras merely as a transit port: Rushing straight to the ferry terminal means missing the historic hillside monuments and panoramic gulf views.
• Expecting Cycladic architecture: Patras is an active port and university city defined by neoclassical buildings and mid-century blocks rather than white-and-blue village alleys.
• Tackling stairs in midday heat: The vertical climb between districts is steep. Take a taxi up to Ano Poli, then walk downhill.

Sensible First-Trip Sequence

Focus on Ano Poli first. Tour the Kastro and Roman Odeon early, then descend the Agiou Nikolaou steps to explore the central plazas and the coastal Cathedral of Saint Andrew. Outlying attractions, such as the Rio-Antirrio Bridge, can wait for subsequent days once you are oriented.
