Rio Castle
What It Is
Rio Castle is a coastal fortification at the tip of the Rio peninsula, at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth. Positioned beside the Rio–Antirrio Bridge and the ferry dock, it features surviving stone ramparts and grounds that also host concerts and cultural events.
Getting There
Located north of Patras city centre, the site takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes to reach by car or taxi. Suburban trains and local buses also run from the city centre to Rio, stopping within walking distance of the fortress.
Visiting Time
Allow 1 to 1.5 hours to walk the grounds and perimeter walls.
When to Visit
Mornings or late afternoons are best to avoid midday summer heat, as the grounds offer little shade. The site rarely experiences heavy daytime crowds, but expect higher attendance on evenings with scheduled performances.
