How to visit Peshawar for first-time visitors

City Layout and Districts
Peshawar is a city of contrasts, split between the ancient walled city and modern expansions. To navigate it, think of it in three primary zones:
- The Walled City (Androon Shehr): The historic core. This is a dense network of bazaars and narrow alleys where the city's exotic border-town atmosphere is most concentrated.
- The Cantonment (Cantt): A planned area with wider roads and colonial-era architecture. It is generally quieter and serves as the administrative hub.
- The Outskirts: Areas leading toward the Khyber Pass, where the landscape shifts toward the rugged terrain of the border region.
Transport and Arrival
Arrival is via Bacha Khan International Airport (PEW). From the airport, the most reliable way to reach the city center is by hiring a registered taxi or using a ride-hailing app.
Once inside the city, transport options include:
- Rickshaws: The primary mode for short distances. Negotiate the fare before starting the journey.
- Ride-hailing apps: Recommended for longer trips or when traveling to the Cantt area for better tracking and standardized pricing.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Visitors often make the mistake of attempting to navigate the Walled City by car. The streets are too narrow for four-wheeled vehicles; instead, leave your car at a secure parking lot and enter the bazaars on foot or by rickshaw.
Another common error is underestimating the cultural conservatism of the region. Dress modestly—covering shoulders and knees—to avoid unwanted attention and show respect to local customs.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a first visit, prioritize the historical and cultural anchors before exploring the periphery:
- Priority: Start with the Qissa Khwani Bazaar (the Street of Storytellers) to experience the city's trading history, followed by the Sethi House to see traditional architecture.
- Secondary: Visit the Mahabat Khan Mosque for its scale and design.
- Optional: A trip toward the Khyber Pass is rewarding but requires more time and coordination; save this for the second half of your stay once you are acclimated to the city's pace.
