Psyttaleia
Overview
Psyttaleia is an uninhabited island in the Saronic Gulf, located between the port of Piraeus and Salamis. It houses Athens' primary wastewater treatment facility. Because it has no tourist infrastructure, visitors do not disembark on the island; it is primarily observed as a maritime landmark from passing vessels.
Getting There
Direct public access to the island is restricted. To see it from the water, take the metro from central Athens to the port of Piraeus, which takes about 20 to 30 minutes. Ferries heading toward Salamis or other Saronic destinations sail past the island within 10 to 15 minutes of leaving the harbor.
Time to Allow
Allow 15 to 30 minutes to observe the island while on board a departing ferry or looking out from coastal viewpoints around the Piraeus waterfront.
When to View
Daylight hours provide the clearest visibility across the gulf. The island itself has no visitor crowding, though ferry services and the port area can be busy during the summer peak travel season.
