Local Transport Options
Potosí is a compact city where the colonial center is best explored on foot. However, due to the extreme altitude and steep terrain, walking long distances can be physically demanding.
- Taxis: These are the primary mode of transport for visitors. They are readily available on street corners and are the most efficient way to reach the Cerro Rico mine or the Casa Nacional de la Moneda.
- Walking: Ideal for the central plaza and surrounding colonial streets. Be mindful of the thin air; frequent breaks are necessary.
- Public Buses: These serve the outskirts and residential areas. They are less intuitive for tourists and lack fixed schedules.
Airport Transfers
Alcantari International Airport (SRE) is located a significant distance from the city center. Travelers have three main options:
- Airport Shuttles: Moderate cost and effort. These provide a direct link to the city center but may require waiting for other passengers.
- Private Taxis: Highest cost but lowest effort. These offer the fastest door-to-door service.
- Public Transport: Lowest cost but highest effort. This involves multiple transfers and is not recommended for those with heavy luggage.

Luggage and Accessibility
