Overview

Founded in 920, St. George's Basilica is the oldest church within the Prague Castle complex. Behind its Baroque facade lies a preserved Romanesque stone interior with historic tombs. Travellers visit to see early medieval architecture that contrasts with the surrounding Gothic structures.

Getting There

From central Prague, take tram 22 or 23 to the Pražský hrad stop (roughly 15–20 minutes), then walk 5 minutes into the castle grounds. Alternatively, walk up from Malá Strana in about 15–25 minutes.

Visiting Duration

Plan for 20 to 30 minutes. The interior is compact and easy to navigate.

When to Visit

The basilica gets crowded between late morning and mid-afternoon due to group tours. Go early in the morning or late in the afternoon for a calmer visit. Summer is the busiest season; winter sees far fewer visitors.
