What It Is

Vyšehrad is an old fortress in Prague whose name literally means "high castle." Featuring a blend of architectural styles from Romanesque to Baroque, the site offers an open setting for a historic walk along fortified walls overlooking the Vltava River.

Getting There

From central Prague, take metro Line C to the Vyšehrad station, then walk about 10 minutes to the gate. Trams also run along the river below the hill. Expect the trip from the city centre to take roughly 15 to 20 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend between 1.5 and 2.5 hours to walk the ramparts and explore the grounds.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn are best for walking outside. Late afternoons provide clear light over the river. The area is generally uncrowded compared to central tourist hubs, though local foot traffic increases on sunny weekend afternoons.
