Prilep lies in the northern Pelagonia plain beneath dramatic granite hills. Organize your visit around three main areas:

• City Center and Old Bazaar: The flat downtown core surrounding the Clock Tower and central pedestrian promenade, home to local cafes, markets, and shops.
• Varosh: A historical settlement north of downtown featuring stone architecture, medieval churches, and the Monastery of the Archangel Michael.
• Marko's Towers: The rocky ridge rising above Varosh, holding the ruins of the medieval fortress.

Arriving and Getting Around

From Skopje International Airport (SKP), travel to Skopje's main transport terminal by bus or taxi, then board an intercity bus south to Prilep. The bus station sits within walking distance southwest of the center.

Central Prilep is entirely walkable. To reach Varosh, trailheads, or the mountain road to Treskavec Monastery, take a licensed taxi from the town center.

Common First-Timer Mistakes

• Hiking midday without preparation: The rocky slopes around Marko's Towers have no shade. Climb during early morning or evening, wear proper footwear, and carry water.
• Expecting transit at trailheads: Taxis will not be waiting at rural drop-off spots or mountain monastery roads. Schedule a return pickup with your driver in advance.

Sensible First-Trip Priorities

Spend your first day exploring the Old Bazaar and walking up through Varosh to Marko's Towers before sunset. Save the longer trip to Treskavec Monastery on Mount Zlatovrv for your second day once you have local taxi arrangements in place.
