Navigating Punta del Este

Punta del Este spans a dense peninsula and extended Atlantic beach towns. Choosing how to get around depends on your itinerary:

  • Walking: Best inside the peninsula, around Calle Gorlero and the port, where distances are compact.
  • Local buses: Frequent routes link the central terminal with Maldonado, Punta Ballena, and La Barra along main avenues.
  • Rideshares and taxis: Convenient for evening outings and direct hops without summer parking hassles.
  • Car rental: The ideal choice for exploring outlying coastal spots like Jose Ignacio.

Fares and Payment

There is no integrated tourist travel card for local transit:

  • Buses operate on a cash-only, pay-as-you-board system.
  • Fares require Uruguayan pesos; card payments are not supported on local routes. Bring small denominations.
  • This setup does not suit visitors expecting digital or contactless transit passes.

Carrasco Airport (MVD) Transfers

Carrasco International Airport sits roughly 110 kilometers west of the resort:

  • Intercity bus: Departs from airport arrivals to Punta del Este terminal. Travel time is roughly two hours. Low effort, budget cost band.
  • Rental car: Picked up at the terminal with a 90-minute highway drive. Moderate effort, moderate cost band.
  • Private transfer or remís: Direct door-to-door ride taking about 90 minutes. Minimal effort, high cost band.

Practical Travel Notes

Summer brings heavy gridlock along coastal roads and bridges toward La Barra, especially around sunset. Winter schedules are sharply reduced. Local buses lack luggage racks and feature high steps, making taxis better for bulky luggage and travelers with mobility restrictions.
