About the Site

The Citadelle of Quebec is an active military fortress situated atop Cap Diamant, bordering the Plains of Abraham. It also serves as an official residence for the Governor General of Canada. Travellers visit to explore preserved garrison architecture, view museum collections detailing military history, and understand the defensive evolution of North America's only remaining walled city north of Mexico.

Getting There

From central Old Quebec, the fortress is reachable on foot in roughly 10 to 15 minutes. The walk involves an uphill approach along Côte de la Citadelle from the historic quarter.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend between 1.5 and 2 hours on-site to view the museum exhibits, explore the grounds, and walk the exterior fortifications.

When to Visit

Crowds are heaviest during summer mid-mornings and early afternoons. Arriving earlier in the day provides a quieter visit. Because much of the grounds and ramparts are exposed to the elements, dress appropriately for wind and seasonal temperature changes.
