Þerney
Overview
Þerney is an uninhabited island and nature reserve in Kollafjörður bay off Reykjavík. It provides nesting habitat for Arctic terns and other seabirds. Historically used for farming, the land hosts sheep and goats from the city zoo each summer. Visitors come to observe wildlife, coastal bird colonies, and seasonal grazing.
Getting There
From central Reykjavík, travel roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car or bus to the Kollafjörður shoreline, followed by a 15- to 20-minute boat ride across the bay.
Time to Spend
Plan for 1 to 2 hours on the island to walk the open ground and watch wildlife, plus travel time across the water.
When to Visit
Summer is the best season to visit, when birds nest and zoo animals graze on the pastures. The island rarely gets crowded because boat access is limited. Take care around nesting areas to avoid disturbing the birds.
