Overview

Angel Island is a designated state park situated in San Francisco Bay. The location holds historical significance as a former Native American ground, military base, and immigration station. Travelers visit to tour preserved historic sites, walk or cycle the perimeter trails, and view the bay and surrounding skyline.

Getting There

Reaching the island requires a public ferry from the city center waterfront, such as the San Francisco Ferry Building or Pier 41. The boat crossing takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend roughly 3 to 5 hours exploring. This allows adequate time to walk the main perimeter path, see the immigration station exhibits, and return to the marina for the scheduled ferry back.

When to Visit

Spring and autumn typically bring the clearest conditions. Summer is warmer but sees heavy visitor traffic and crowded boats, especially on weekends. Opt for a morning departure to avoid peak crowds and afternoon bay winds.

Nearby Attractions

Consider combining your outing with nearby points along the bay:

  • Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary (3.7km) and Alcatraz Island (3.8km)
  • USS Pampanito (5.7km)
  • Fisherman's Wharf (5.9km)
