Actuncan Archaeological Site

Actuncan is an ancient Maya site located along the Mopan River in western Belize. It contains evidence of human habitation spanning approximately 2,000 years, with some traces dating back to before the Common Era. Travelers visit this site to see the structural remains of a long-term Maya settlement and to understand the chronological development of the region's early inhabitants.

Getting There

The site is located near San Ignacio. Most visitors reach the ruins via a short drive or local transport from the town center. The journey typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on traffic and road conditions.

Duration of Visit

A visit to the site generally requires 1 to 2 hours. This allows enough time to walk through the habitation areas and view the archaeological remains without rushing.

When to Visit

Visiting during the early morning is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The dry season is generally more favorable for accessing the river-side terrain. The site typically does not experience the same level of crowding as larger Maya centers in the region.
