What to Expect

The Macal River flows through the Cayo District in western Belize, passing San Ignacio before joining the Mopan River to form the Belize River. Travelers visit for canoeing, kayaking, and observing wildlife along the banks, where the Belize Botanic Gardens and the Maya ruins of Cahal Pech are located.

Getting There

From central San Ignacio, the riverbank is a 5- to 10-minute walk. Access points and boat launches are located near Hawkesworth Bridge.

Time to Spend

Plan for 2 to 4 hours for a canoe trip or walk along the water. Set aside a half day if stopping at gardens or ruins along the river.

When to Visit

Early morning and late afternoon offer cooler temperatures and active wildlife. The dry season from December to May provides calmer waters, while rainy periods bring stronger currents. The riverfront is generally uncrowded, with moderate local activity on weekends.
