Understanding the City Layout
Santiago sits in Chile's central valley with the Andes Mountains to the east. Facing the mountains provides an instant eastern compass. The city is best understood from west to east along Line 1:
- Santiago Centro: Historic core with Plaza de Armas and La Moneda. Busy by day, quiet at night.
- Lastarria and Bellas Artes: Walkable cultural districts bordering Centro, filled with cafes and museums.
- Bellavista: Dining and nightlife hub across the Mapocho River at the base of Cerro San Cristóbal.
- Providencia and Las Condes: Upscale eastern districts with modern high-rises and shopping centers.
Airport Transit and Getting Around
From Comodoro Arturo Merino Benítez Airport (SCL), official shuttle buses connect to metro stations like Pajaritos. For direct rides, book official taxi counters inside the arrivals hall before exiting into public areas.
The Metro de Santiago is fast, safe, and efficient. You must buy a reloadable Bip! card at station ticket windows; single paper tickets are not available.
What First-Timers Get Wrong
- Wandering Centro late: Sightsee by day, but head to Lastarria or Providencia for dinner.
- Accepting rides from airport touts: Use official indoor desks or verified apps to avoid scams.
- Skipping the hills early: Cerro Santa Lucía and Cerro San Cristóbal offer essential orientation views over the valley.
Sensible First-Trip Shape
Start with Centro, Cerro Santa Lucía, and Lastarria on foot. Day two fits Bellavista and Cerro San Cristóbal. Save day trips to Valparaíso or vineyards for later once you understand the city layout.
