Overview

The Votive Temple of Maipú is a Catholic church standing roughly 90 meters tall in southwestern Santiago. It was built to commemorate the Battle of Maipú, which secured Chilean independence. Travellers visit to see its large-scale architecture and explore an important landmark in the country's national history.

Getting There

From central Santiago, take Metro Line 5 to the Plaza de Maipú terminal station. The trip takes about 35 minutes, followed by a 10-minute walk south to the site.

Allow 1 to 2 hours for a visit. This provides adequate time to see the main hall, view the interior features, and walk around the surrounding plaza.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings and afternoons are typically quiet. The site becomes crowded on Sundays and religious holidays during mass services. The outdoor esplanade has little shade, making morning visits advisable during hot summer months.
