Overview
Monasterio de San Francisco comprises the stone ruins of the earliest monastery built in the Americas, situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Colonial Zone of Santo Domingo. Travellers visit to explore the surviving arches, exterior walls, and chapel foundations, which show early sixteenth-century Spanish colonial masonry.
Getting There
The ruins are located in the northern section of the Colonial Zone. Walking from the central historic area takes about 5 to 10 minutes. From central downtown Santo Domingo outside the historic district, a taxi or rideshare takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.
