Sarajevo Old Orthodox Church

Overview

The Sarajevo Old Orthodox Church is a Serbian Orthodox place of worship built in 1539 on the site of an earlier structure. Travelers visit to see its distinct stone-and-timber architecture, preserved icons, and enclosed courtyard, which together represent centuries of Eastern Orthodox history in the city.

Getting There

The church is located at the edge of the old city centre. From central Baščaršija, it is a direct walk of about two minutes. Trams traveling through the old town stop within short walking distance of the entrance.

Time to Spend

Plan to spend 30 to 45 minutes on site. This gives sufficient time to view the sanctuary interior, inspect the artwork, and walk through the courtyard.

When to Visit

Mornings are best for a quieter visit before walking tours arrive. Crowds can pick up during peak midday hours. Because this remains an active place of worship, modest dress covering shoulders and knees is required.

Nearby Attractions

You can easily combine a visit with several nearby sights:

  • Baščaršija (0.1km): The historic Ottoman market district.
  • Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque (0.1km): A 16th-century Ottoman mosque complex.
  • Muslihudin Čekrekčija Mosque (0.2km): An early Ottoman dome mosque.
