War Childhood Museum

What It Is

The War Childhood Museum documents the experiences of people who grew up during the Bosnian War. Rather than focusing on military history or political timelines, the permanent collection displays personal belongings donated by survivors—including toys, clothing, letters, and drawings—each paired with a short first-person account and recorded video testimonies. Visitors come to understand the everyday human impact of the conflict through the perspective of the children who lived through it.

Getting There

The site is located just north of the historic Baščaršija district in central Sarajevo. From the main pedestrian area of the Old Town, it takes roughly 5 to 10 minutes on foot walking up Logavina street.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 1 to 1.5 hours. While the exhibition layout is compact, reading the individual story cards accompanying each item and watching selected video interviews requires dedicated time.

When to Go

Mornings and early afternoons are generally quieter. Because the exhibition requires reading in quiet, reflective spaces, avoiding peak midday hours and large tour groups makes it easier to engage with the material.

What to Combine It With

Several other historic and cultural sites are located within short walking distance:

  • Svrzo's House (0.1km): A preserved 18th-century Ottoman residential house.
  • Museum of Sarajevo 1878–1918 (0.1km): A museum focused on the Austro-Hungarian era near the Latin Bridge.
  • Sarajevo Old Orthodox Church (0.2km): One of the city's oldest places of worship.
  • Old Synagogue in Sarajevo (0.3km): A historic synagogue building housing Jewish heritage exhibits.
