The Baray

The Baray is a massive reservoir constructed during the Khmer Empire within the Angkor archaeological site. Visitors go here to see the scale of ancient Khmer water management systems and the engineering used to support the region's agriculture and urban centers.

Getting There

The site is located outside the main city center of Siem Reap. Most travelers reach the reservoir via tuk-tuk or hired vehicle. The journey typically takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on traffic and the specific starting point within the city.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to explore the perimeter and the associated structures. The experience consists primarily of viewing the expanse of the water and the surrounding embankments.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat, as there is limited shade around the reservoir. The site is generally less crowded than the primary temples of Angkor Wat or Bayon, though tour groups are common during the peak dry season.
