What It Is

Stadsholmen is an island in central Stockholm connected to the mainland by several bridges. Together with neighboring islets, it constitutes Gamla Stan, the city's historic old town. Travelers visit to walk through the preserved street network, view historic architecture dating back centuries, and explore Stockholm's foundational settlement area.

Getting There

From Stockholm Central Station, the island can be reached on foot in about 10 to 15 minutes by crossing the bridges to the south. Alternatively, taking the metro directly to the Gamla stan station takes roughly 2 to 5 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan for 2 to 4 hours to walk along the waterfront, navigate the cobblestone alleyways, and view key historical buildings across the island.

When to Visit

The island is accessible year-round. It gets crowded during the summer months between June and August, as well as on weekend afternoons. To avoid large tour groups and congested alleys, visit early in the morning or during the evening. In winter, cobblestone paths can become icy, so wear appropriate footwear.
