Stortorget is the oldest public square in Stockholm, situated in the heart of the Gamla Stan district. Visitors go here to see the historic architecture of the old town and to experience the seasonal Christmas market, which sells traditional Swedish crafts and food at the end of the year.
Getting There
The square is located within the central old town area. From the city center, it is accessible via the Stockholm Metro (Tunnelbana (Gamla stan station). Depending on your starting point in the center, the journey typically takes 5 to 15 minutes.
Duration of Visit
Most visitors spend between 30 minutes and one hour exploring the square. If you are visiting during the Christmas market, you may wish to allow more time to browse the stalls.
When to Visit
The square is accessible at all hours. It becomes crowded during the peak summer tourist season and during the year-end Christmas markets. To avoid the largest crowds, visit during weekday mornings.
