Barrage Vauban

Overview

The Barrage Vauban is a 17th-century defensive weir built across the Ill River. Today, it functions as an enclosed pedestrian bridge. Travellers visit to see the historical sculptures displayed in the interior corridor and to access the rooftop terrace, which provides elevated views of the Ponts Couverts and the Petite France quarter.

Getting There

Located on the southwestern edge of the central island, it is a 10 to 15-minute walk from Place Kléber in the city centre. Tram stops Musée d'Art Moderne and Alt Winmärik are within a five-minute walk.

Time to Allow

Allow 20 to 30 minutes to walk through the interior passage, look at the sculptures, and spend time on the viewing terrace.

When to Visit

Visit during daylight for rooftop visibility. The terrace can get crowded around midday during peak summer and the winter market season. Morning visits are quieter.
