Grande Île, Strasbourg

Overview

Grande Île is the historic island at the center of Strasbourg, encircled by the Ill River and canals. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, it comprises a network of preserved medieval streets and historic civic buildings. Visitors come to walk through the medieval street layout and along the surrounding riverbanks.

Getting There

Because the island is the center of Strasbourg, visitors already in the downtown area are within walking distance. From the main train station, reaching the western border of the island on foot takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Central tram routes also stop along its outer perimeter.

Time to Allow

Set aside 2 to 4 hours to walk the streets, cross the bridges, and see the perimeter canals. Exploring specific historic buildings or stopping for food will extend this to a half day.

When to Visit

Early morning is practical for walking before foot traffic increases. The area gets crowded during summer afternoons and throughout December. Spring and autumn provide moderate weather and smaller crowds.
