Shark Island

Shark Island is a small landmass located off Point Piper and Rose Bay in eastern Sydney Harbour. Named for its physical resemblance to a shark, the island is primarily a visual landmark. Travelers visit to view the island's unique shape and the surrounding harbor scenery, typically by boat.

Getting There

The island is accessible from the Sydney city centre via ferry or private boat charter. Depending on the departure point and water traffic, the journey generally takes between 20 and 40 minutes.

Time Requirement

Since the island is small and primarily viewed from the water, visitors typically spend 30 to 60 minutes in the immediate vicinity. Those opting for a brief landing or a slow circumnavigation may require slightly more time.

When to Visit

The island is best visited during daylight hours for clear visibility of the coastline. Spring and autumn offer moderate temperatures for boating. Like many popular spots in Sydney Harbour, activity increases during the summer months and on weekends.

Nearby Attractions

Because the island is located within the harbor, it can be combined with other waterfront sites. Nearby locations include:

  • Port Jackson (2.2km)
  • Taronga Zoo (2.3km)
  • Darling Point (2.3km)
  • Macquarie Lighthouse (2.6km)
