How to navigate public transport in Sylhet, Bangladesh
August 29, 2026 · last updated · about 4 min read
Local Transport Modes
Navigating Sylhet requires a mix of motorized and non-motorized transport depending on the distance and destination.
- Rickshaws: These are the primary mode for short distances within the city center and residential neighborhoods. They win for flexibility and navigating narrow lanes where cars cannot enter.
- CNG Auto-Rickshaws: These three-wheeled motorized vehicles are best for mid-range trips across the city or reaching the outskirts. They are faster than pedal rickshaws and more suitable for rainy weather.
- Ride-Sharing Apps: Available in the city, these provide a standardized way to book cars or bikes, reducing the need to negotiate fares manually.
Tickets and Passes
Sylhet does not utilize a centralized transit pass or integrated ticketing system. All local transport is paid per trip in cash. This system is straightforward for short-term visitors but requires carrying small denominations of Bangladeshi Taka, as drivers often struggle to provide change for large bills.
From Osmani International Airport (ZYL) to the City
The airport is located a significant distance from the city center. Travelers have three main options:
- Pre-paid Airport Taxis: Low effort and medium time. These are the most convenient for those with heavy luggage.
- CNG Auto-Rickshaws: Medium effort and medium time. These are more cost-effective than taxis but offer less protection from the elements.
- Ride-Sharing: Medium effort. Reliability depends on driver availability at the terminal.
Practical Travel Notes
- Rush Hours: Traffic congestion peaks during morning and evening commutes, particularly around the main markets and the Surma River bridges.
- Luggage: Large suitcases are difficult to fit in rickshaws; CNGs or cars are necessary for airport transfers.
- Accessibility: Most local transport is not wheelchair accessible. Pavements are uneven, making pedestrian movement challenging in high-traffic areas.
- Last Services: While rickshaws operate throughout the night, ride-sharing availability may drop during very late hours.
