How to plan your first visit to Sylhet, Bangladesh

City Layout and Districts
Sylhet is structured around the Surma River and the surrounding hilly terrain. For a first-timer, it is easiest to think of the city in three zones:
- The City Center: The commercial heart where most markets, administrative offices, and transport hubs are located. It is densely packed and high-energy.
- The Tea Garden Periphery: The outskirts where the urban landscape transitions into the rolling hills and tea estates that define the region.
- The Waterfront: Areas along the Surma River, which serve as a natural boundary and a hub for local boat transport.
Arrival and Local Transport
The primary gateway is Osmani International Airport (ZYL). From the airport, the most reliable way to reach the city center is via pre-arranged transport or registered airport taxis.
Once inside the city, navigation relies on a few key modes:
- Rickshaws: Ideal for short distances within the city center.
- CNGs (Auto-rickshaws): The primary mode for medium distances and trips to the city outskirts.
- Private Hire: Necessary for full-day excursions to distant tea gardens or wetlands.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Visitors often attempt to see the tea gardens and the city center in a single day. Because of traffic congestion and the distance to the estates, this is impractical. Instead, dedicate separate days to urban exploration and nature excursions.
Another common error is underestimating the weather. Sylhet is one of the wettest regions in Bangladesh; always carry rain gear, regardless of the season, to avoid being stranded during sudden downpours.
Suggested First-Trip Structure
To get a balanced sense of the region, structure your visit in this order:
- Day 1: Urban Orientation. Explore the city center and the riverfront to understand the local pace of life.
- Day 2: The Tea Estates. Head to the outskirts to visit the tea gardens and learn about the region's primary industry.
- Day 3: Natural Landmarks. Visit the surrounding wetlands or hills. Save the more remote shrines or distant forests for a second trip once you are acclimated to the local transport system.
