Ciyou Temple
What it is
Ciyou Temple is a working Taoist temple in Songshan District dedicated to Mazu, the sea goddess widely worshipped across Taiwan. It dates to the 18th century and remains an active neighborhood place of worship rather than a museum piece, so visitors typically see locals burning incense, making offerings, and consulting temple staff alongside the ornate roofline carvings and courtyard architecture. Around Mazu's birthday, the temple hosts a procession in which her statue is carried through the streets in a palanquin, accompanied by decorated floats and traditional battle-array performance troupes.
Getting there
From central Taipei, the temple sits right beside Raohe Street Night Market in Songshan District, reachable by MRT to Songshan Station or Houshanpi Station followed by a short walk, generally around 20-30 minutes from downtown depending on your starting point.

Most visitors spend 20-30 minutes taking in the architecture and watching worship activities. If you arrive for the market next door, the temple works well as a quick stop before or after.
When to go
The temple and adjoining night market draw large crowds in the evening, especially on weekends, so a daytime or early-evening visit is calmer if you want to look around without a crowd. If your trip coincides with Mazu's birthday, expect the surrounding streets to be considerably busier due to the procession and festivities.
