Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Taipei

Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Taipei

The Immaculate Conception Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Datong District, Taipei, Taiwan. The Latin Rite church serves as the see of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Taipei created by Pope Pius XII with the Bull "Gravia illa Christi".

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

This is the Catholic cathedral church of Taipei, the seat of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Taipei. Beyond its religious role, it's a landmark of the city's small Catholic community, with a red-brick facade and interior typical of early-20th-century church architecture in Taiwan. Travellers usually visit for the building itself and the quieter atmosphere it offers compared to the busy streets of Datong District around it.

Getting there

From central Taipei, the cathedral sits in Datong District, a northern part of the old city that's easily reached by MRT and a short walk, generally around 20-30 minutes from downtown areas like Zhongxiao or Ximending depending on your starting point and transfers.

How much time to allow

A visit typically takes 20-30 minutes, enough to see the exterior and step inside if the church is open to visitors at the time.

When to go

As an active place of worship, it can be busier during Mass times, so if you want a quieter look at the building, aim for a period outside scheduled services. Otherwise there's no particular season or crowding pattern to plan around.

What to combine it with

The cathedral is close to several other Datong District sights, making it easy to pair with a short walking route:

  • MoCA Taipei (0.8km) – a contemporary art museum in a former school building
  • Ama Museum (0.9km) – a museum addressing the history of "comfort women"
  • Taipei Twins (1km) – a nearby landmark worth a brief stop
  • Taipei Bridge (1.2km) – for views over the Tamsui River
