Liberty Square
Liberty Square is a public plaza covering over 240,000 square metres (2,600,000 sq ft) in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei, Taiwan. It has served as the city's public gathering place of choice since its completion in the late 1970s. The name of the square recalls the important historical role it played in Taiwan's transition from one-party rule to modern democracy in the 1990s.
What it is
Liberty Square is a large open plaza in the Zhongzheng District, built in the late 1970s and best known as the ceremonial approach to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall behind it. The paved square is flanked by two traditional gate structures and framed by Chinese-style buildings on either side, and it has been the site of major public gatherings during Taiwan's political history. Visitors come mainly to walk the open space, photograph the gates and the memorial hall's white archways, and get a sense of the site's role in Taiwan's shift to democratic rule.
Getting there
From central Taipei, the square is reachable by metro in around 15-20 minutes; the closest station is Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, from which it's a short walk to the plaza. Taxis from downtown take roughly 10-15 minutes depending on traffic.
How much time to allow
Plan for 30 to 60 minutes to walk across the square and take in the gates and surrounding architecture, or longer if you're combining the visit with the memorial hall itself.
When to go
The open plaza has little shade, so early morning or late afternoon is more comfortable than midday, especially in summer. The square can get busy on weekends and around public holidays, and it's occasionally used for events or gatherings that may limit access to parts of the space, so it's worth checking ahead if you're visiting for a quiet walk.
What to combine it with
The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall sits right on the square, making it a natural extension of the same visit. The National Theater and Concert Hall are about 0.4km away on the plaza grounds. Taipei Taiwan Temple is roughly 0.7km off, and the Taipei Guest House is about 0.8km away, both workable as part of a longer walk through the district.
