National Museum of History
What it is
This is a history and cultural relics museum housed in the Nanhai Academy compound in Zhongzheng District. It was the first museum established in Taiwan after the Republic of China government relocated there, and its collection centers on Chinese historical artifacts and antiquities. Getting there
From central Taipei, the museum sits in the same cultural cluster as the Botanical Garden and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, an area reachable by MRT (nearest stations are a short walk away) or by taxi in roughly 15-20 minutes from downtown, traffic depending. It's a walkable neighborhood once you arrive, so combining it with nearby sites on foot is straightforward.

Plan on one to two hours to see the exhibits at a comfortable pace, more if you want to linger over specific galleries.
When to go
Weekday mornings tend to be quieter than weekends and afternoons, when local visitors and school groups are more likely. Being an indoor museum, it's also a reasonable option on hot or rainy Taipei days when outdoor sightseeing is less appealing.
What to combine it with
The Taipei Botanical Garden is essentially next door (0.1km), making it an easy pairing before or after your visit. The National Theater and Concert Hall (0.8km) and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (1.1km) are both within walking distance and fit well into the same half-day itinerary, as does the Taipei Guest House (1.1km) if you have extra time to explore the surrounding district.
