Getting Around Tangier

Walking: The Medina and Kasbah are pedestrian-only. Steep stairs and cobbled paths make walking the sole option inside the old quarter.

Petits Taxis: Blue with a yellow stripe, these metered cabs handle urban trips and pick up shared fares. They win for trips between the rail station, downtown, and Medina gates.

Grands Taxis: Shared collective cabs run fixed suburban routes, winning for trips to Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules.

City Buses: Cheap but slow, serving outer districts rather than tourist spots.

Tickets and Fares

Cash is mandatory everywhere. Contactless bank cards are not accepted. Rechargeable transit cards suit local commuters, not short visits; pay bus drivers in coins. Taxis require small cash notes or coins.

From Gibraltar Airport to Tangier

Transit requires crossing into Spain, heading to a port, and boarding a ferry.

  • Tarifa Ferry: Bus or taxi from the border to Tarifa, then sail to Tangier Ville Port. Effort: High. Time: Half-day. Cost band: Moderate to high. Wins by docking right at the Medina.
  • Algeciras Ferry: Transfer to Algeciras, then sail to Tanger Med. Effort: High. Time: Longest. Cost band: Moderate. Requires an onward grand taxi or bus to central Tangier.

Practical Transit Rules

  • Luggage: Petit taxis have tiny boots; hire a grand taxi for oversized bags.
  • Accessibility: The Medina cannot accommodate wheelchairs due to stairs and steep paving.
  • Timing: Downtown traffic peaks late afternoon. Taxis thin after midnight, when night rates apply.
