Overview

The Church of the Acheiropoietos is a 5th-century Greek Orthodox basilica located in central Thessaloniki. It is an intact example of early Byzantine architecture and was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 alongside the city's other Byzantine monuments. Visitors go to observe its early Christian basilica structure, marble columns, and surviving architectural details from late antiquity.

Getting There

Located in the city centre near Agias Sofias Street, the site is reachable on foot from central landmarks like Aristotelous Square in roughly 5 to 10 minutes. Urban buses running along Egnatia Street also stop within a short walking distance.

Time to Allow

Plan for around 20 to 30 minutes to view the nave, aisles, and interior masonry.

When to Go

Morning and midday visits provide the best natural light to view the interior stonework. The church rarely sees heavy tourist congestion, though active religious services may restrict sightseeing access. Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable weather for walking between central sites.
