Overview

The Church of Panagia Chalkeon is an 11th-century Byzantine Orthodox church and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Travellers visit to study its classic cross-in-square brick architecture, four-column layout, and surviving medieval frescoes and mosaics depicting biblical scenes.

Getting There

Situated just north of Egnatia Street, the church sits directly in central Thessaloniki. It is accessible on foot in roughly 5 to 10 minutes from Aristotelous Square and major central hubs. Several municipal bus lines stopping along Egnatia Street provide direct access.

Recommended Time

Allow 20 to 40 minutes for a visit. This is sufficient to examine the exterior masonry, explore the interior frescoes, and stroll through the small park surrounding the building.

When to Go

Mornings offer better light for seeing the interior art and typically have fewer visitors. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for exploring central Thessaloniki on foot. While generally quiet, brief surges in visitor numbers happen when guided tour groups arrive.
